Students learned the history of Nike's logo and how important logos are to a company. Each student is required to create their own logo that represents them. This logo will go on their portfolio which will hold all of their work. As graphic designers have prameters to work with so did the students each logo must include

We were very fortunate to be partnered with Strathhaven High Schools National Art Honor Society for a program called Art pARTners. They raised money to buy us supplies on our wish list. A huge Thank You to Jennifer Rodgers their incredible art teacher for sponsoring our school a delivering the supplies. Below is a picture of the tempera paint we requested and 200 pounds of clay is being delivered shortly. Thanks again Jennifer
Today we had the pleasure of going on a trip. Learning does not occur in a vacuum. And this trip especially was very educating, students were able to listen and speak first hand with artists working in the field. The Cool Jobs Expo was hosted by Fresh Artists. It put students in small groups to learn about jobs relating to art. Art is everywhere, everything you sit in, drink from, see and touch is designed by an artist, everything around us. Today were learned about Industrial Design, Record Producing and Web Designing, Mural Painting, and last and most delicious a Pastry Chef. Students were able to see a future in the arts. A future some didn't know existed. We had a great time and I can't wait to go back next year with a whole new group of students.
You have all heard of the Philadelphia Flower Show. It is one of the most attended events in the city of Philly. Well at Wilson we are hosting a smaller version through a community partner association with the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, The Junior Flower Show. The students created projects that were inspired by the theme "National Treasures" in honor of the National Parks System turning 100 years old. Students created Botanical Illustrations, Photographs, natural jewelry, headdresses, critters, totem poles and designed their own parks. The work was fabulous and on display until next week in the marble hallway of school. Yesterday judges from the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society came out to judge our entries. Students received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons for different class entries. A best of show was also chosen! The judges from the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society. Best of Show Awardgoes to Ivy in grade 7 for her botanical illustration of roses. Her artwork will be displayed at the Philadelphia Flower Show in March at the Convention Center. A look at the whole showHere is a New York Times article comparing the life of Kanye West to the life of Pablo Picasso. I found it fitting since we have just finished cubist inspired name design. Palo Picasso is the founder of Cubism.
The Life of Pablo vs. the Life of KanyeBy DANIEL McDERMON FEB. 19, 2016 How does the self-proclaimed “greatest living artist” measure up to Pablo Picasso, namechecked in Kanye West's new album, “The Life of Pablo?” PhotoPablo Picasso and Kanye West, both at 35. Pablo Picasso is but one of the many, many (many!) cultural figures to whom Kanye West has compared himself. Other peers identified by Mr. West include Steve Jobs, Leonardo da Vinci, Socrates and the former Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. It can be hard to keep up with these claims, let alone evaluate them. How can you know whether he truly measures up? We’re here to help. Below are some notable accomplishments of two artists, from their early works up to Mr. West’s current age, 38. Decide for yourself. Here is the link Well the first project is complete in all 8 classes. In an attempt to go more digital each student will post a photo of their finished work along with an artist statement on google classrooms. In theory this sounded like a solid plan, however with only 10 very slow functioning computers it is proving to be very time consuming. For those that know me I am not patient when it comes to technology so I will be posting a Donor's Choose project for more technology. The art projects however look great!
Art is a half year course and as sad as I was to see my students from the first half move on to other classes I was excited to meet my new students and see who I would get. Like a child on the first day of school wondering which teacher they will have, I am wondering which students I will have. What will their interests be? What new projects will we do?
The first project is usually a get to know you project. This year it is a painting of the letters in their name. The students are doing great! |
