I was very fortunate to participate in a teacher program at The Fabric Workshop. We toured the exhibition and then learned a bit about silk screening and had a smash screen session. The Fabric Workshop has programs for students both individually and as a class. I hope to get the students there for a collaborative piece, possibly next year.

In a district as large and poorly funded as Philadelphia we are very fortunate to have Fresh Artists, a non profit organization. Fresh Artists is the brain child of Barbara Chandler Allen, who came up with the idea of using the art made by children to help fund the programs that were no longer being funded. A child makes art, it is photographed and a business or corporation donates money to fresh artists and receives a huge reproduction of a child's artwork. The money buys supplies for the schools. Earlier this year I applied for a grant for basic classroom supplies and our grant was approved and supplies have arrived this week. Thank you again to Fresh Artists!
The School District of Philadelphia host a year end art show to showcase all the talent and hard work of the students. This years show is a milestone it is the 60th anniversary show. All of the schools in the district are encouraged to send their best work that is representative of what is happening in our classrooms. Wilson has 15 students participating this year. The work includes portraits, cut paper masks, pop art pieces, drawings, a jungle scene and photography.
A major drawback to PSSA testing is that our class periods are shortened from 75 minutes to 45 minutes. That makes building with paper mache a little more challenging. The students have learned that if they take all the pieces out to work on them they actually spend more time in set up and clean up than they do in creation. So smaller parts at a time and hopefully we will get through this by parent conferences. I feel we may be extending the deadline a bit due to the shortened time periods, but the students are working hard and trying to get everything done. We have two completed projects thus far, a large paintbrush and a minecraft block. Hopefully next week a ramen noodle bowl, huge box of donuts and maybe a cave. Looking like a jungle in hereThe jungle scenes are coming along nicely and the students have begun to add color, varying tints and shades of green so that not two plants share the same color.
Congratulations to JennyJenny's drawing has won and will be the design placed on the T-Shirt for all 8th graders this year! Way to go Jenny. It was a difficult competition as there were 8 total entries. All 8th grade teacher s voted on the designs. The other designs are pictured below. Students are still building in 713Section 713 is still hard at work building their large scale sculptures of everyday objects in the style of Clas Oldenburg. This is a very exciting project and I can't wait to display the finished projects. Jungles of WilsonStudents in 610, 701 and 703 are creating jungle scenes in the style of Henri Rousseau. Drawing from live plants and watching live animal cams from the National Zoo and the Houston Zoo students are making up their own jungles and learning the mixing of greens using oil pastels. Buddhist temples meet TibetStudents are using their sketches of the Buddhist temple across the street with images of Tibet to create a landscape. They will be finishing the landscapes using watercolors and pen and ink. Grant received for more suppliesWe will be receiving a grant for basic supplies at the end of this month. The grant is coming from Fresh Artists. A non profit organization that turns students into philanthropists by using their artwork to promote art and gather donations from big businesses and corporations. It then takes these funds and filters them back to the schools with the highest needs in the form of art supplies, money and trips. You can check out their website by clicking here
The students in 603 are working on pop art projects in the style of Romero Brito. He is an artist that uses bright colors and patterns to fill his designs of popular images. The students used an image in the center of the paper and dived up the background and filled in the spaces with patterns.
