Clay portrait busts were made by the 7th grade class. They learned many clay techniques and had difficulties that they overcame through trial and error. The results are excellent!
The 7th grade class was fortunate today to have an outside speaker today. A senior student, Kyle, from Masterman High School gave a presentation on color. The students learned how color is used in interior design and also in fashion design. After the presentation the students took color tests to find the colors that matched their personalities. Thank you Kyle for visiting us. This evening was very special to the Northeast region teachers of the arts. WE had a celebration of art, music, and dance and it showcases all of the talent in our elementary, middle, and high schools. Many years ago this was a yearly event in Northeast Philly but was ended for whatever reasons about 5 years ago/ Well tonight it's back and we had Tony Danza as a host!! Here is a sample of the art on exhibit, ours is the first picture. The 6th graders have been very busy learning about clay and where it comes from. Yes clay is mud and it is the only substance once fired that will not decompose over time. This is why we have examples of pottery from ancient cultures. The students learned the methods of pinch, coil and slab techniques along with slipping and scoring to adhere clay together. They are very proud of their work. Every Tuesday and Thursday the doors to the classroom are thrown open and we spill into the hallway so the students can create their large scale Pop Art Sculptures. It's been crazy, hectic, a bit much for an OCD teacher but always fun and the results are the best I have ever seen. These are 7th grade students working with minimal materials of cardboard, styrofaom, paper mache and paint. Through hardwork, challenges adaptations, and imagination they have created awesome work! Take a look
Food, fun, festivities from all different cultures were abundant in the marble hallway. International Day was so exciting. There was food from all over the world, I'm giving a shout out to whoever made the shrimp spring rolls and the Brazilian chocolate flour-less cake they were delish!! Students entertained us with music and dance from their countries. Information about all countries was presented on tri fold boards and interactive computer sites, we even got henna tattoos! A fabulous day for all. Thank you to the ESOL teachers that organized the whole event. One of the reason why I love teaching in Philadelphia is the diversity of the students that I teach. This year for International Day we created a 'Hands across the world' project. Each student traced their hand on paper, in the background they put the flag of their country and in their hand they drew symbols of their country. This is the country they were born in not the country of their parents and grandparents. This project was completed by 3 different classes, 30 countries are represented and 5 different continents! America was started by those from other countries coming to make a new life filled with hope and hardship, those first immigrants built this country and the tradition continues today. Wilson truly is a melting pot! Can we build a cave? Sure why not! Every once in a while students have ideas and I don't know exactly where they plan to go with them so I just give them as much materials and freedom as I can and I hope for the best. That's exactly what happened with the cave, a very determined group of 7th grade girls decided they would make a cave for the marble hallway. After long weeks of planning and even longer days of installation it turned out great! Materials supplied were pvc piping, brown kraft paper, tissue paper, paint, and tape. The results are amazing. Below are pictures of the process and one of the best rewards is the reaction of all the people who have seen it, they love it!
