We had some very exciting news this week. First our classroom was adopted by Strath Haven High Schools National Arts Honor Society. This partnership occurred through a new effort from the PAEA, Pennsylvania Art Education Association and Philadelphia Art Teachers Alliance, both of which I am a proud member. The pARTners program matches an NAHS school wit a school in need, then they have fundraisers and provide much needed supplies to us. Thank you to Strath Haven High School NAHS and Jennifer Rodgers their art teacher. We are very thankful for this pARTnership.
More exciting news came yesterday from Fresh Artists. We are receiving a special #givingTuesday art grant. This grant will supply us with more supplies such as oil pastels and watercolors. Fresh Artist is a local organization that has been providing funds and art supplies to schools in need. It began years ago with photographing of students work and making very large prints of that work. That work is then purchased by large companies to hang in their offices and the money goes back to the schools. It is a great idea the child artist is thrilled that their work will hang somewhere for many others to see and the money goes to help others, thus turning each artist into a philanthropist. Thank you to both organizations for providing much needed supplies so that our students can continue to create the unique and wonderful work expressing themselves.

Students in grade 8 created prints in the style of the Iniut Native Americans. Students learned about different tribes and their art and will be learning the techniques to create this art on their own. Students had to draw an animal they shared a personality trait with. Then it was carved into foam and printed. The results are great! And the paper mache continues for the 6th grade! Grade 7 students have learned about Ancient Egypt and have visited UPENN Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology with their Social Studies class. In art they are creating Egyptian Tomb Paintings. They have learned the specific style the artists used in Ancient Egyptian to create paintings. They have used this style to create paintings that depict themselves doing every day activities of today. Students have learned the hieroglyphic form of writing and will make cartouches on their work. Students in grade 6 have traveled Easter Island and viewed the large scale sculptures on the Island. They have speculated on how the statues were made and why and also how they were moved. Students then began to create their own sculptured heads to represent Wilson Middle School. They are creating the sculptures out of cardboard, newspaper and paper mache. A messy but fun project that will hopefully be done in time for report card conferences. Here's a list of the students whose work was submitted to represent Wilson in the Anti Bully Prevention Contest.
