Students in section 705 wasted no time getting back into the groove of things. They started immediately building large scale sculptures. They are independent self starters that work well together sharing ideas and creating their own projects. When complete we should have a large spoon, rubik's cube, bowl with noodles, a hat, a paintbrush and more. Mistakes are being made and projects are being revamped the classroom becomes a makerspace for 90 minutes it is an amazing process to watch.

Students are working on the Pop Art work in every class. Many different ideas are being expressed from Warhol to Thiebaud's to Litchenstein to Oldenburg. Everything from food to comic to sculptures and it all looks fabulous. All media is being used colored pencils, paint, printmaking and collage. It will be on display during parent conferences at the end of April. Below are some of the works in progress.
A huge shout out to Jennifer Rodgers and the Strath-Haven High School National Art Honor Society. Their fundraising efforts have purchased up 400 pounds of clay! We will now be able to do some hand building, sculpting and wheel throwing. I am so thankful to them for their kindness and generosity in funding our program. This clay should last us through next year.
I have written a donor's chose project to be funded. It is for 10 chromebooks for our classroom. Right now we have 8 working computers to share between 33 students. Why do we need computers in art you may wonder, well several reasons. Researching a subject, producing a student film, making clay animation, and editing photographs. For a limited time all donations are being matched dollar for dollar. Any amount is greatly appreciated and adds up quickly. My students and I thank you. To donate please click below.
Several different pop art projects are in the works. Relief print portraits in Andy Warhol style, favorite foods in Wayne Theibaud style, large scale sculptures in Oldenburg's style, and self portraits in Litchenstein style. All types of media and the students are having fun
We took advantage of the beautiful weather this week and went outside to draw en plein air, that's french for open in full air. What did we draw the wonderful Buddhist Temple across the street from our school. This building was originally a plain square cement building and with the addition of columns, dragons and other architectural additions it has transformed into a building you would expect to see in China. The students were able to capture every detail from the dragons on the roof to the railings on the front steps, they saw things I didn't even notice and the drawings are excellent. We will turn them into watercolor paintings later on in the month.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is hosting a fun and exciting exhibition on Pop Art! The students will be learning about this era in art and creating Pop Art images based on their lives today. As I waked through the exhibit my mind was racing with images for today and wondering what the students would create. Pop Art began around the mid 1950's and ended around the early 1970's. It focused on Popular icons and images in a world that was just beginning to market itself. Today many years later we are a world full of brands and mass media that is quickly delivered and forgotten. The internet crosses all barriers and no one is without knowing what is happening almost as quickly as it happens. Below are some images from the exhibit that will be shared with students before they begin their projects. |
